The Great Loop

This web site is an attempt to provide a quick and easy way for our family and freinds to keep up with us on "The Loop"

The Great Loop is a 6000 mile jouney down the Tennessee River and the Tombigbee Waterway to Mobile, Alabama. From there around the coast of Florida via Key West with a side trip to the Bahamas. Back to the coast of Florida we head up the east coast to the Chesapeake Bay. From the Chesapeake we continue up the east coast through New York Harbour, up the Hudon River, and across the Erie Canal. Through a series of canals we go across Lake Ontario into Canada. We will spend a month in Canada. Back to the US, we will cross Lake Michigan to Chicago. Following the Illinois, Mississippi, Ohio, and Cumberland Rivers back to Tennesse.

LOOP CLOSED: 8/12/09: 310 days, 6170 miles, 107 locks, 3 countries, 16 states, 85 different marinas, 10,050 gallons of diesel fuel, thousands of photos, countless new friends, and priceless memories...

Good Bye Ft Lauderdale

Pictured are some shots of the marina from the Bahia Mar Marina next door to the Hall of Fame Marina. One shot shows our "little" boat. We have stocked the boat and have a good weather window so we are outward bound for the Bahamas. We'll be back when we are out of beer. (Beer in the Bahamas is $40 per case!)

Tilton Ft Lauderdale Week

As the week progressed Brett and Rebecca worked on their tan and lots of new strokes in the pool! Pappa even swam with them although the water was very chilly!

The beach is always a great place to make a new friend...Aaron decided he wanted Brett to be his brother! They had a good time and slept well every night...so did Pappa and I!

The dinghy rides were a big hit! Magi even enjoyed touring the waterways and checking out all the yachts and beautiful homes!

The West Palm Beach Boat Show boasted gorgeous and large yachts.......great hotdogs, sunglasses and of course teeshirts! All in all it was a profitable day! Jerry even found UT fenders..yes you guessed it.....ORANGE!

Brett poses as he helps Pappa paint in the engine room! Ya gotta get a little work in!

There was a Christian Rock Concert on the beach....they were expecting several thousand attendees.....Brett got the race car drivers autograph!

Putt-Putt, beer and pizza, and quickly into the pajamas! Another great day! We are already missing you! We are glad to came to see us in Ft Lauderdale!

Tiltons Invade Ft Lauderdale

If you can believe it these are photos from our first day in Ft Lauderdale.......Exhaustion comes to mind...ha. All kidding aside....Jerry's daughter, Magie, and kids, Brett and Rebecca, have joined us for a week of fun in the sun! A little rain blessed us the first day....but we managed a long walk down the beach to watch the cruise ships leave. Monday we went to the Museum of Discovery and Science....we had a great time watching the 3D Imax movies about Dinasours and Under the Sea ....I think we look dangerous in those glasses! After all the challenging puzzles and activities we were starved....so off we went to Brinys Pub for lunch and then back for our
Space Simulator Ride....WOW. When we got back to the Hall of Fame Marina we found the
swim meet going on with the competition for the world record holder in the backstroke ....we peeked thru...but finally went in to observe the talented swimmers.
What a great day! Dinner on the boat was sparse and we watched more talent in home videos of Brett playing basketball and Rebecca singing in a play! We have some world record holders of our own.
More fun today as we go to the pool and enjoy the weather!

Week 3

With Lynn gone to Knoxville I got several boat projects done. My friends Jay and Rusty stayed on the boat a few nights as we went bar hopping and boat part shopping. The Dania Marine Flee market was great! The black boat pictured above was towed in after an engine room fire with 11 people aboard. It is great to have Lynn back as we get ready for Magi, Brett, and Rebecca.

Sea la Vie on Steroids

Here are a couple of pictures of a "Sea la Vie" imitator across the intracoastal from us. Walking down the beach you can see the cruise ships leaving thru the inlet. One picture shows the same boat as ours to give you an idea of the size.

Today I went with my neighbor to fuel his boat at the fuel barge that anchors right off the waterway. This barge carries 10,000 gals and he refills daily. Nothing like fresh fuel at a great price. At least one part of the economy is working!
