The Great Loop

This web site is an attempt to provide a quick and easy way for our family and freinds to keep up with us on "The Loop"

The Great Loop is a 6000 mile jouney down the Tennessee River and the Tombigbee Waterway to Mobile, Alabama. From there around the coast of Florida via Key West with a side trip to the Bahamas. Back to the coast of Florida we head up the east coast to the Chesapeake Bay. From the Chesapeake we continue up the east coast through New York Harbour, up the Hudon River, and across the Erie Canal. Through a series of canals we go across Lake Ontario into Canada. We will spend a month in Canada. Back to the US, we will cross Lake Michigan to Chicago. Following the Illinois, Mississippi, Ohio, and Cumberland Rivers back to Tennesse.

LOOP CLOSED: 8/12/09: 310 days, 6170 miles, 107 locks, 3 countries, 16 states, 85 different marinas, 10,050 gallons of diesel fuel, thousands of photos, countless new friends, and priceless memories...

Dingy Envy

Since we have returned from Knoxville we have stayed busy working on the boat and getting ready for Christmas. Our 10' dingy, now secure to the swim platform, will provide us access to shore when we are at anchor. It has been an ongoing project but pretty small compared with these ...

Just a few pictures of other boats we see daily in the harbor. The large yacht is "Tatoosh" owned by Paul Allen (co-founder of Microsoft). It is 301' with a crew of 30. Of course this is his smaller yacht, his larger boat is over 400'. Tatoosh has a 40' Hinkley tender, 40' sailboat, 4 other watercraft, and a helicopter. The Coast Guard boat patrols the harbor with machine guns fore and aft. The sailing thip HMS Bounty from "Mutiny on the Bounty" is on the pier down from us.

How big is your dingy??

Well, what a great surprise! We look relaxed and we're envious. Gary's drooling. Sounds like a great trip.

Things are crazy on this end. Gary has been transferred so we're on the move again. This time back south to Aiken, SC. I think this is a good thing - we haven't really gotten rooted here and the sailing isn't great even though we're near the Columbia river. Too much current and not many sailors. I'm looking forward to seeing trees again. It's very arid and not very pretty, like say Santa Fe. So if the south will have this liberal girl again, I'll be joining Gary once the house sells. Not the best time to be selling as you well know. If you're curious, check out our virtual tour on MLS #156068. Aiken is pretty, albeit small, although it's only 2 hours to Atlanta. Needless to say we'll be visiting Knoxville and hope you'll visit us once your back. Gary' trying to figure out where to put the boat in - Savannah River, Lake Murray or Charleston. He'll figure it out. Well, thanks for letting us know about your adventure - we'll keep an eye out on your blog. Have a very Merry Christmas. Take good care.
