The Great Loop

This web site is an attempt to provide a quick and easy way for our family and freinds to keep up with us on "The Loop"

The Great Loop is a 6000 mile jouney down the Tennessee River and the Tombigbee Waterway to Mobile, Alabama. From there around the coast of Florida via Key West with a side trip to the Bahamas. Back to the coast of Florida we head up the east coast to the Chesapeake Bay. From the Chesapeake we continue up the east coast through New York Harbour, up the Hudon River, and across the Erie Canal. Through a series of canals we go across Lake Ontario into Canada. We will spend a month in Canada. Back to the US, we will cross Lake Michigan to Chicago. Following the Illinois, Mississippi, Ohio, and Cumberland Rivers back to Tennesse.

LOOP CLOSED: 8/12/09: 310 days, 6170 miles, 107 locks, 3 countries, 16 states, 85 different marinas, 10,050 gallons of diesel fuel, thousands of photos, countless new friends, and priceless memories...

Pebble Isle Marina

Our run (60 miles) from Green Turtle on Lake Barkley to Pebble Isle Marina on Kentucky Lake was beautiful and uneventful. We crossed the Barkley Canal from Lake Barkley to Kentucky Lake which is actually the Tennessee River. So we are back in TN with about 500 miles back to Knoxville.

Barkley Canal...Bridge to no where...
Abandoned marina...
Pebble Isle Marina...
80' yachts, house boats, and pontoon boats...Sea la Vie seems at home lots of places...Don and I have eaten great! Other peoples cooking...
Saturday I said good bye to Don as he headed back to Illinois. Thanks for your help and friendship. I rented a car (actually a truck) and dropped him at the Nashville airport. I continued to Knoxville to pick up Lynn up for us to complete The Loop and take the boat home to Knoxville.

I was only home one night. It was really strange sleeping at the house. This is only the second time I have been home since last October. I MISSED THE BOAT!!

Our next stop will be Pickwick for a few days. I have told several friends there is something wrong with our steering. Sea la Vie does not want to turn to port toward Knoxville, but wants to continue south back to the gulf. I guess that won't happen for awhile...

What a great trip. There is working and boating. Boating is better. Thank you so much for the opportunity to parts of our country from a unique perspective. The people we met and the total experience will never be forgotten. Experiencing the navigating and operating the Sea La Vie was a wonderful lesson from a very patient Captain. I wish I could have made it all the way to Knoxville. I have been watching the weather and thinking where you might be. I hope you come to Chicago at Christmas time and we can get together and swap some stories. Take a slow boat to Knoxville and enjoy the trip.

THANKS AGAIN.
