Labor Day

After being on the boat for 10 months and doing The Loop....there is nothing like coming home to family.....Jerry's grandchildren Rebecca and Brett came (with parents) for the Labor Day weekend.....We enjoyed a night on the boat.....they loved it but Magi did not sleep much with two kids in the v-berth. Next day was game day......we had four tickets....so father, daughter and kids went to the game while I napped and listened to the game on the boat. My grand kids joined us on Sunday for an afternoon of water sports before going to Booms Day....they love it and enjoy playing with each other.........................Kinsey (9) and Rebecca (6)....those two are really girly girls.......But they can keep up with the boys pretty good!Rebecca and I mop the decks before the game...........................Brett and Rebecca enjoying the hot tub..........Hang on .........we're comin'........................Waiting for the fireworks can take a lot of patience...so we entertained ourselves...............as we watched the crowd, ate and explored the boat. My two grandchildren had never been to see the fireworks before.......................Brett and Turner played several games of cards..............what fun..........especially after the energy drinks they gulped down at Booms Day........................ The Vol Navy is a happening in itself....hundreds of boats rafted together using the game as an excuse to party....

Docked really close was Albert Haynesworth's new yacht.....a real beauty.....

This weekend we had 100,000 of our friends dressed in their finest orange around for a little football....As they say...."It's football time in Tenessseeeeeeeeee!"....did I drag that out enough?

Look at this fan (Brett)..................what more could you ask for......GO VOLS!!!! Here we are..........energy drinks and all! We had a few wired kids on our hands!.....Even the chicken wondered what in the world we were thinking....................We had to do the Booms Day Walk and get the T-shirts!
Wake boarding never looked so easy.........................yeah right!

My friend Sam Thompson was diagnosed in May with cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer). He died 8/31/09. I was honored to get to see him when we returned to Knoxville. We had talked several time during the trip, hoping he could join us along the way. Sam was full of life and lived it as if everyday could be his last. This is one of the reasons Lynn and I chose to do the trip at this time in our life. Here's to you, Sam...

As we cruise down the River toward home....you just see it all......from the smallest of places to the palaces along the way......... Condos in Loudon Tennessee overlook the water...........................

The captain had slowed to a turtle pace the last 20 miles.......but eventually he had to come home.......is that a smile I see???

There it is..............HOME................how many days have we been gone...........what will it feel like to get into the tub, sleep in that king size bed, and just be on land???? Fear .....What if we hate it?

The house seems lonely..........Like your puppy when you pick him up at the vet........just excited to see you......jumping and licking......The house seemed to breath easier.....just to have us moving around inside.......as we unload the boat one trip at a time..........enough of that......lets plan a party..........a few days is enough...............that'll keep us busy.................We cannot wait to see our friends................WE'RE BACCCCCKKKKKKKK...........................

Nickojack Lock....looks more like a war zone..............but we made it thru......current and all.......... We noticed this fellow hugging one of the mooring cells......just a classic...He seemed to be enjoying himself and caught one as we passed by.................

I had to take pictures of the walls of the locks as we went thru.............I plan to go thru these and frame one for the house.......you must admit the colors and texture is nice.................I am a artist want'a be................ha Just one of the pretty pictures of Tennessee green ............as the trees grow out of the water.........ya know.....it is really beautiful here..................

Guntersville Yacht Club

Browns Ferry Nuclear plant....as we passed.....Nice day with scattered showers and one downpour.....We realize after this trip we need wipers on the upper deck........ Really gorgeous rock formations along the way.....everything is very green with all of the rain we have been having this year.

We only had one lock to get thru today....but a barge was once again ahead of us and we had a two hour wait.....sooooooo I just had to bake.....I wonder where all the pounds are coming from.........today it was peanut walnut bars with Hershey chocolate icing......YUM.....your own cooking even tastes good when you are waiting..........

Finally made it thru and here we are pulling into the Lake Guntersville Yacht Club.....boy, did they have damage from the high winds over Easter......they are still repairing boats and building new docks.

It is always a pleasure to visit here.....everyone is friendly, courtesy car, and the clubhouse has nice facilities.

The pool looks inviting...maybe the showers will subside long enough for us to take a dip.

On the other side it reads.....GOSSIP HALL....... I think that is accurate for most clubs....hee hee

They were preparing for the big Labor Day week end coming up.....cleaning the grounds and doing general repairs.

They made us feel welcome....we did laundry.....relaxed and are prepared for a jaunt to Chattanooga tomorrow............Knoxville here we come.....hope to be home on Monday......Man, oh man, is this going to be an adjustment......especially for Jerry.....I may have to put a porthole on the wall over the bed and find an iTune sound of water lapping against the hull ......

Joe Wheeler State Park

Before we left Pickwick, Jimmy Joyner took us to a great dinner....Thank you .......it was nice to see you again and sorry we missed you Trish......

On our way to Joe Wheeler .....pretty day ...it is nice to start to see the familiar landscape of home......
Only one lock today but had to wait 2 hours for a barge ......amazing to see the water gurgling up so forcefully.......

Passing by Florence Alabama....we got this shot.....We made it to Joe Wheeler.......a restaurant and pool......YEAH....we will be here a couple of nights to catch up........
As I have said many times before.......SHE looks pretty good at any dock! We did a little cleaning here...although most will be done when we return home.....as well as a couple of repairs .........us girls are high maintenance...............

We watched this gentleman exercises his dog this morning....as he walked the dock....his dog swam.....and swam .........and swam.........in and out of at least 15 docks.....bless his little heart.......he looked tired......Guess I would never make it as a personal trainer..............

Our neighbor came to visit.....he and his wife were on their way to Gulf Shores........................

Our new friends, Alan and Susann aboard "Kaos"..............we learned much from you......but most important was how to drink good wine from a styrofoam cup in a dry county.......good dinner.....good wine.....great company. They have lived aboard for three years...and just recently bought a home in Florida........We hope we will cross your path again.......................

We enjoyed an invite for happy hour from Carlton and Becky aboard "SeaMoore" ......................, they are planning to leave on the loop in October 2010. We had met them at the Joe Wheeler Rendavous last October. Thank you for your hospitality.....great dinner and conversation......hope you will stop by if you are in Tennessee! We loved your new Mainship........great boat!

Up early as we leave for Guntersville Yacht Club......We plan to be home a week from today....as the days close in .....I am sure that if I am missing Jerry .....I will find him sleeping on the boat at the dock at the house.....I am already predicting that one!

Pickwick

Hey ......I'm back.....After dropping Don at the Nashville airport Jerry came on the Knoxville to get me....nice not having to drive by myself......First day back we cleaned the boat inside and out....up today early to get a good start for Pickwick........... The ride was pretty uneventful...thank you very much! The houses and rocks were varied along the waterway....we tried to capture some of it for you guys who follow our blog....

Who's your Daddy?......Looks like this barge ended up in the dirt???? We just wondered how that happened?

When you are just cruising......boardom sometimes sets in.....we imagined all sorts of things in these canisters..............doesn't take much to keep us entertained...............

The houses along the way all seemed to be built up.......probably for flooding.....the walk down to the water was steep and rocky....and mostly no docks..............

I imagine the views are nice................

We came upon 3 men in a boat.....waving and yelling for assistance....we thought maybe they were fishermen....but there were not any rods or bait on the boat.......just Bud Light.......We pulled them a mile or two to their dock.....Hope they made it! I think this home has seen better days.......................

And then there is this............just on the opposite end of the spectrum..........We appreciate how pretty it is....but all I can think of is the number of baths to clean and the windows......forget it!

The boat is really enough to handle....and anyway....I wouldn't be able to ever find Jerry in there!

The lock to Pickwick was easy......late in the day and we were the only boat there.......not hard to get back in the swing of things..............

And then here we are......ABOUT TO CROSS OUR WAKE.........I had wondered what emotion would come to mind....and quite honestly thought it would be one of relief.....and excitement that we would going home. You know, this last 10 months on the boat has been life changing.....and I feel a little sad that it is over. What an experience we have had.....and how truly lucky ,we all are.....us loopers and cruisers just to have the opportunity to do this..................

We think the rainbow was our sign..........................just as we were crossing.....there it was..............Awesome..............

You know Jerry......this would be the exact SPOT we crossed our wake..........ha

Pebble Isle Marina

Our run (60 miles) from Green Turtle on Lake Barkley to Pebble Isle Marina on Kentucky Lake was beautiful and uneventful. We crossed the Barkley Canal from Lake Barkley to Kentucky Lake which is actually the Tennessee River. So we are back in TN with about 500 miles back to Knoxville.

Saturday I said good bye to Don as he headed back to Illinois. Thanks for your help and friendship. I rented a car (actually a truck) and dropped him at the Nashville airport. I continued to Knoxville to pick up Lynn up for us to complete The Loop and take the boat home to Knoxville.

I was only home one night. It was really strange sleeping at the house. This is only the second time I have been home since last October. I MISSED THE BOAT!!

Our next stop will be Pickwick for a few days. I have told several friends there is something wrong with our steering. Sea la Vie does not want to turn to port toward Knoxville, but wants to continue south back to the gulf. I guess that won't happen for awhile...

Green Turtle Bay (KY)

Fog again when we tried to leave Little Diversion Channel. We didn't leave until 9:00, as the fog began to lift. Long day planned today, about 130 miles. We will end our journey on the Mississippi River after 50 miles, then travel 50 miles on the Ohio River, and finish with 30 miles on the Cumberland River taking us into Kentucky. Here is the boat that was anchored in Little Diversion Channel with us last night. They left in the fog but we soon caught them since we travel much faster than them. The boat, "Easy Pace" is from Lancaster, PA and started the loop in June.

Here is the bridge in Cairo linking Illinois to Missouri. This is as we are about to leave the Mississippi.

Here's the bend from the Mississippi to the Ohio River...

This is Olmsted Lock on the Ohio River is under construction, due for completion in 2013.

How about this lock! What lock?? The lock is actually underwater. You may have seen on the news the flash floods in Louisville, KY. This has caused high water on the Ohio River. We actual took the boat over the top of the dam.

All kinds of debris and strong current from the flooding upstream. Unlike the Mississippi we are now going against the current (3-4 knots).

Metropolis, IL...where is Superman?? The only thing we could see in Metropolis is the floating casino.

Here is the other lock on the Ohio that was under water. Again we just followed the buoys right over the top of the dam. These 2 small locks will be eliminated when the Olmsted Lock is complete.

Can you believe we went between this tug and the bank?? We called the tug captain on the radio and he told us to pass his stern. He was turning this barge on the Cumberland River.

Here is a real lock! This lock is on the Cumberland River taking us to Lake Barkley.

Green Turtle is a great resort marina after being on the Illinois, Mississippi, and Ohio Rivers.

Little Diversion Channel

Not a lot of pictures to post because there is a not a lot to see. We did not leave Hoppies until 11:00 due to morning fog. We were ready to leave at 7:00 but you could not even see the end of the dock so we borrowed the courtesy car and went into town for a big "down home" breakfast.

Here Don has been promoted from bosun to first mate. We are having a great time rolling down the river. The Mississippi is not a great place for pleasure boats!

Small towns along the Mississippi...These are wing dams all along the Mississippi. They are just above (or below) the surface just outside the channel. They are meant to control current and reduce shoaling. Some are deep and create strong cross currents on curves in the river turns. Keeps you awake at the helm...

This is a boat anchored in front of us in Little Diversion Channel. We ran about 75 miles today with no locks and anchored for the night. Little Diversion Channel is near Cape Girardeau, MO.

Here is a view looking out of the small channel back at the Mississippi. The day before they had 4" of rain and the creek was really muddy with lots of debris floating. The muddy water flowing toward the Mississippi...

Well I flunked convection oven cooking. The food conatainer did not make for great food. Back to chips and beer. Lynn we miss you and your great cooking!!

Hoppies

Today we said goodbye to Grafton to head down the Mississippi to Hoppies (more about Hoppies later). This should be a relatively short day, 70 miles and 2 locks. Here is a picture as the Illinois joins the Mississippi River...

Hoppies is a legendary stop on the Mississippi. Besides the wealth of river knowledge from the owners, Fern and Charles Hopkins, it is one of the last stops for fuel and supplies for 250 miles.

There are fish that jump in your wake. Some actually jump in the boat. These guys are trying to shoot the flying fish with a bow and arrow!

Did we make a wrong turn? Are we already to cuba? How about Havana, IL...

We finally hit a lock just right. The lock was ready to close and we slide right in. Finally!!

Peoria, IL

Don and I left Ottawa about 8:30 today for about a 70 mile run. Don's wife, Michelle, waves good-bye as we depart with great weather.

This is the development taking place at Heritage Harbor where we left from today.

We missed the lock by 15 minutes and had to wait for 2 hours. We were lucky with the wait, some talked about waiting 5 hours.

Don makes for great crew, not quite as experienced as Lynn after her 77 locks!

We stopped for the night at the IVY Club (Illinois Valley Yacht Club). Great facility, $1.00 per ft and $2.50 for diesel fuel.

Great facility with bar and dining room. Fried chicken buffet for dinner.

Too bad we don't have more time to enjoy the IVY Club. We'll see how the first lock goes tomorrow and decide if we do 50 miles or 170, not much in between.

Ottawa, IL

Would you like to see the engine compartment facing foreword or aft? I can assure you that I have seen it from every angle this week.

We arrived at Spring Brook Marina Tuesday and Lynn left Wednesday for Knoxville (flight out of Chicago). Spring Brook is a large Carver Dealer so I wanted to take advantage of their parts and service. I did the grunt work, like changing the engine oil, cleaning the dingy, and many small projects. They did the hard stuff like a new ice maker, windshield wipers springs, cabin door latch, generator hoses, and many more. Can you see the $$$$ flying over the transom?? People ask what you do all day! My "to do list" is now down to 28 items after spending 4 days at the marina.

Don and Michele moved the boat with me down the river 12 miles and 1 lock to Heritage Harbor Marina, a great facility. Don and I will leave tomorrow (Sunday - 8/2) to take the boat to Pickwick. 800 miles and 10 locks will probably take us about 8 days. I will try to keep you posted of our progress.

Can you believe when the Illinois River flooded last year the water was to the top of these poles for the floating docks here at Heritage!

I'm sure that you can tell Lynn is gone because you just get the facts, without all the great commentary (the best part)!!

Illinois River

We left Chicago Monday 7/27 to head down the Illinois River. Because of our height (19'6") we were not able to take the boat thur downtown Chicago but had to use the Calumet River/Canal. This is a very industrial and commercial waterway.

This is the "famous" 19.1' bridge. This is a fixed RR bridge (the lowest clearance on The Great Loop). We are 19.5'!! Before we left home we had our satellite wing hinged so we could get down to 18'. As it turned out, the water level at the next lock was lower than normal pool and we cleared by 18".

After missing a lock opening by 10 minutes we had to wait 90 minutes for commercial traffic to clear. This also delayed us making a restricted bridge opening in Joilet giving us another 60 minute wait. This, plus another 30 minute wait, meant we stopped for the night at Harborside Marine. A long day from 8:30 to 7:30 to cover 60 miles and 3 locks plus several draw bridges.

Back to the big commercial locks like the Tennessee River except bigger and lots more commercial barge traffic.

At Harborside Marina they had these "floating condos."

Up early Tuesday morning to go only 1 lock and 20 miles to Spring Brook Marina. They are a large Carver dealer where we will have some service done. Lynn leaves to go back to Knoxville for a "grandchild fix."

Some friend of friends are going to join me to bring the boat down the Illinois, Mississsippi, Ohio, and Cumberland Rivers to Pickwick, TN. Pictured are Don, Michele, Chris, and Dick. As I told Lynn it takes 4 people to replace her! 1 or 2 of them will go with me then switch with the others along the way (about 800 miles).

Lynn will rejoin me at Pickwick to bring the boat back to Knoxville. We plan to be in Knoxville by Labor Day for the first UT game. GO VOLS!

Chicago Day 2

Entrance to Shedd Aquarium...We watched the water spew into the air and all the kids play and wade as it hits the ground. We did not go to the aquarium, but it is suppose to be awesome......again a great example of the art in the city and all the green space......Monroe Harbor... and an even more spectacular view at night.....as the wind blows and the gentle clanging of the halyards...almost sounds of some ancient tribe....ha

Art Institute of Chicago.... You can make a full day of this one! Monet was one of my favorites! Grant Wood did the American Gothic................Picasso was also amazing! Ancient tribal art as well....we did this in two hours...was really not near enough time. The museum itself is almost 200,000 sq ft......Some of the more contemporary exhibits....I was teasing Jerry .....said we should just have our grand kids do some art for over our mantel......although I do believe theirs would be much more meaningful.....I know art is in the eye of the beholder....but I truly think I should frame the back of my phone book where I doodle all the time........................hee hee

Millennium Park...

Again, the art in the city.........is just......just.......can't find the adjective.....We happened upon the Chicago Symphony...as you can see below.....free to everyone...in the park .......couples shared a bottle of wine.....families has brought their tent for their little ones.....and all sat, munched, drank and enjoyed....MUSIC.....gosh do we all need to stop the wheels of life and just listen.....It can take you away.....as these talented musicians play..............

Chicago Symphony...You would think the sound would not be top notch outdoors.......think again......look at all the speakers from the structure above.....the quality of the music was ....almost as good as my ipod.

Navy Pier.... Long ago was a naval facility......turned amusement park, restaurants, and crowds abound.......All on the water, the charter boats are there, as we walked we saw a wedding party boarding one of the larger yachts......We made it to a nice little restaurant and sat outdoors...as we always do ...and enjoyed the weather and people watching........Many families....and Chicago is very diverse.....as you walk you hear as many as 3 or 4 languages ............ The world has become just one large neighborhood...................

Field Museum... Turner and Brett....check out the dinosaur........He was LARGE.............Again no time this trip....we will save this one until you are with us..............................

As I talked to one of my girlfriends in Knoxville, she reminded me of the American Girl Store....It was in Watertower Place....a large shopping mall with 7 floors and many water features throughout.........My grand daughter Kinsey has become a big fan....she got Julie for Christmas last year and has enjoyed her so.........Therefore......being the good Nanna that I am....I just had to go....I got so excited.....you could not believe this store.....I called Kinsey and told her what I was seeing .........had to do a little shopping....but next time you will just have to be here too.....................

Chicago River.... We would have loved to taken the boat down this.......but the bridges would not allow that.........with a height of over 19 feet......we would have done a little damage.ha

Venetian Festival Boat Parade...This was hilarious........The theme was Hollywood............ the boats were all lit up .....Some had really gone all out....Michael Jackson, Johnny Cash, Pirates of the Caribbean, and many more.....the music was loud and made its way thru all the crowds......as once again....people sat, laid, anchored, rode bikes.......some there all day........... Chicago is really rallying around the 2016 Olympics being here.........great place for them.......Maybe it will be selected as the city..............we hope so............we can come back......The wind was catching Marilyn's head below..........we almost lost her off the bow of the boat as the wind gusts around the corner.....................Below............Gilligan's Island.....as they sang the theme song everyone cheered......................Fireworks over the harbor...As the night ended.............FIREWORKS.............FIREWORKS............and more FIREWORKS..............

Saugatuck

Well .....while we were in Grand Haven...someone told us we should visit Saugatuck, just a 30 mile run....and I am really glad we did.......a really artsy town...lots of shopping...fudge too.........and the marinas are full.....but we managed to find a slip in Sergent Marina....very nice ....all the marinas are together side by side....right in the downtown area. Shopping, restaurants, and as you can see live music are walking distance......even a spa or two....in case you need your toes done.................

A museum....floating even...but I opted for shopping instead.................

Kids enjoyed sailing at camp........................

Many jewelry stores, art from Africa and other countries in many stores.......one of my favs was Good Goods......nice pottery and just a nice mix of items.

We were here during the week....and it was fairly crowded....or at least more so than some of the places we have been.......................Last night we had to listen to karaoke.......some really good and others.....well lets say really brave......

The ferry was on a chain ......by hand .....from the 1800's...............interesting

Band was good.....and as you can see......so were the dancers.....where are we? I'll never tell.

Saugatuck......what a fun place to enjoy for a few days........The town is having a festival this week-end.....they say the boat slips are booked a year in advance and very expensive....soooo if you plan to come this way...check it out

Grand Haven

We arrived safe and sound.....Pulled in to dock....bow first as they had suggested........could not get the power cord to reach....sooooooooooooo....move the boat ....change all the lines and fenders......lets try this again....Yes Yes it reaches.....but no power on the boat! So after trying for an hour or so.....we discovered a breaker on the boat had tripped.........atl ast....POWER.....Just in time to see some sort of maneaver...by the Coast Guard.......

Nice home.........lots of shopping......so we were off for feta pizza and looking thru the stores......My favorite is Panache.....two stores...one is womens clothing and the other household decorative items and furniture....fun to look.....great musical water and light show behind our boat to end the day

Manistee

As we entered the harbor to the marina in Manistee.....The Municipal City Dock...so many nice marinas in Michigan...they have really done a great job. And as you can see another GREAT LIGHT HOUSE....for our collection of photos....we decided we are going to do a book titled LIGHTHOUSES OF THE GREAT LOOP...........Has someone done it already.....?? We arrived late and were whipped although we had a smooth ride.....I cannot understand yet why boating just wears you out....But we made time to shower and see the town.........

Another sweet small town....but mostly all closed for the day.....Really interesting stores and many vacant as we have seen thru out our trip....We guess because of the economy.............

We managed to find one store open and bought Jerry a new pair of shorts...........he got a hair cut....he did not get a picture ....but it was an old fashion barber shop......red and white striped pole and all...........We also managed to get the laundry done ....WHEW......I have gotten a little laid back with things.......at last..............

We always manage to find the art and wine stores..........heehee

So long .....we really enjoyed your town.....so many visitors, Victorian tea cups, horses, flowers, ice cream stores...and most of all .....the fudge shops....literally one on every corner....sometimes two......But seriously....we loved the weather here, no cars and just enjoyed the slow pace .......so until next time....We are on our way today...about a 150 mile run....makes for a long day....

Mackinac Island

Our trip to Mackinac Island from Drummond Island was cold but smooth. We steered from down below. As we entered Mackinac Harbor we saw the awesome bridge, the ferries do not slow for anything or anyone...as they are the big business here........and unlike some of the marinas we have visited.........the slips were taken.....as we approached we saw the town bustling with bikes, horse and buggies, joggers and ice cream cone lickers.................come with us for our visit.............fudge, fudge, and more fudge

The island is as good as it gets when it comes to remembering the years past.........china plates and cups are used in many of the restaurants.....and with only horses and bikes on the island....the only motorized vehicles are the fire trucks and police cars.......

The Mackinac State Marina is actually the only marina here.......The Chicago to Mackinac Sailing Race is this weekend and the town is actively preparing for the crowd.........As usual this is a popular spot for weddings and we were fortunate enough to see the bride and groom riding in their carriage............very romantic ......

A great business here obviously .....bicycles.....wheather it is the rental, repair or parts side of the business.....great spot for you if that were your specialty. Of course the horses are the main attraction...as many breeds as one might imagine and all seem to be well taken care of and catered to......they also provide in an indirect way, all the colorful flowers on the island.....the men with the shovels and wheelbarrows are on the streets all day...cleaning up after the carriages and riders.....taking this to fertilize I am sure..........great recycling..............

Fort Mackinac on the hill .....overlooks the water and is a nice gathering place for tourists and locals.........................

We hope to see the boats as they come in from Chicago.....we will be staying thru Monday in hopes to catch a glimpse of the front runners...........................

Sea la Vie seems to be at home anywhere..........so far so good...................................

We had to take a tour of the island first thing.....Andy our driver did a good job of pointing out the history and particular points of interest......Oscar and Oliver were given ample time to rest and drink as we proceeded thru the streets.............

This time of year is it the collection of bicycles along the street, but a much different picture in the winter months with the snow covered buildings and streets as the snowmobiles park along the sidewalkes.......

The Grand Hotel has special carriages for their guests........and the drivers are suited oh so elegantly in red suits with a top hat..................or in this case a ball cap...ha

Some of the pretty homes are actually still residences....though most are charming business....this was one of my favorites.....an art and jewelry store....with all hand made special and one of a kind items......very interesting....................

We stopped at Arch Rock on our carriage ride for a break and photo opportunity.........

You can see that this is appropriately named............amazing........................

This is a cottage on the main street and it's entrance.........It is so pretty, the foliage around the gate......it is this attention to detail thru out the island that makes it so very special...................

All the houses are painted....one local resident said that it is necessary to paint at least once a year and maybe twice........another good occupation here ......for painters...................

Sunday morning we go a carriage ride to The Grand Hotel........what can we say......if you have not been there ....it is worth the trip........

Great detail in the architecture of the residences here............................all very Victorian.............You can see the Grand Hotel in the photo................one of the finest and largest hotels in the world..........................Aproaching the hotel....just a grandeous entrance........and one can just imagine Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeves on the front porch in the 1800's.......better still are all the unknown lovers in there time that were fortunate enough to be here.........

A private litle herb garden at the side of the hotel......I bet it is appreciated by the chefs here............

Drummond Island

So after leaving the Benjamins and our anchoring out experience.....we were really blessed with this smooth as silk water all the way to Drummond Island...so here we go, about 60 miles wide open water..............

I snuggled up with a pillow and blanket up next to the captain....as we just auto-pilot our way thru the waters...............

Can you tell not much to do and how may pictures do you need of our wake???

So hello United States..........we are so excited.....to just be back in the states.....Internet and phone at last......
First getting thru customs....A nice customs officer came aboard and just asked a few questions, got a few numbers and looked at a few papers....looks easy enough to me....of course I am not the one preparing for all of this......Good job Captain Jerry.

Time for our favorite thing....filling the tanks with diesel....price here was $2.99 per gallon,

but we just needed 400 gallons today..............

Well today was just a catch up day....laundry....and even had the opportunity to use the courtesy car.....bought a few groceries......and tried to keep warm and dry.................where is the summer????
We did not have Internet or phone service here.....so we were cut off from the rest of the world....I could not believe that the world did not stop or something.....it was just awful.......but you could hear a pin drop..........quiet...........and the fenders on the boat whined all night.......as I went from the sofa .....to the bed....to the sofa....to the bed.....

And Jerry wonders how I can take a nap so easily when we are running???? Hello?

Benjamin Islands

Leaving Killarney .....again....the words used to describe the awesome views, sky, trees , water....you just cannot capture it in words or photos for that matter....and another lighthouse.....The ferry takes a truck across to another island.....hard to imagine in our world that everything here is done by boat ........water all around................Here we are going thru the Narrows.....nine miles long and goes back to The Pool....it is described as a highlight of the North Channel of Lake Huron......remote.....brisk and windy weather....and you are totally back to nature.....................

The photos we have seen of this area in the winter....show ice, snow and more ice.....we have been told that many of the people stay year round............lakes are 2' thick ice

Those pretty rocks peek out at us along the way...........with no channel markers we just use our eyes, GPS, and hopefully follow another boat....ha

We pulled into Little Current for lunch on our way to The Benjamin Islands......just a cute little town.....with their very own light house...........

They open the bridge every hour....we were early so we waited patiently for 45 minutes....kind of.....as Jerry kept her in the middle of the channel.............Entering Little Current.....we understood the name of the town......it should have been named big current............

Everything you need....we had lunch at a little sandwich shop and went thru a few stores....Jerry needed another chart.....I am going to wall paper the bath in these charts when we are done....it will be the most expensive decor in the house....anyway and I checked out the art shops....mostly American Indian pottery and art here.....

It seems every town has its share of bars.....a must here I am sure in the winter months.........

After lunch at Little Current.....we headed toward the Benjamin Islands...to anchor for the night....we have not done much "on the hook but thought this would be a great opportunity. There were about a dozen other boats in the cove.....very protected....as we listened to them on the radio planning their menu for dinner.......each would prepare one item and they would dinghy over to one boat for their feast. Food and friends always a good combination

Back on track to the anchorage.....it was going well until we decided to scout around on the dinghy...............
Jerry always tries to include me in the photo he is taking of the boat or the mountain or the water or whatever......in case you are wondering why so many photos of me?????

Quite...quite.....you can only hear the lapping of the water on the hull of the boat and the wind rustling thru the trees...................you would think we would relax.....but...............

We just need photos..........clear water.....and one of the ladies sails her little boat back and forth across the cove.......she was there on her big sailboat. We think many people stay a while....seeing the laundry hung out to dry off the boats....and the fire wood stacked on the large flat rock for the evening fire..................

We just wanted to explore and see what we might get into............

Getting too close once.......the engine on the dinghy almost got hung on the rocks....so off again we go.....................

Spotting the rock .....Jerry said what a great photo that would make......he could not believe it when I said..."take me over captain"....................

The water was really cold .......the rock is really large.....

So as I sat here thinking and looking about.........it dawned on me.......You have to go live someone else's life to appreciate and understand your own.....We have lived the life of boaters the last months.....have met many different people........people who live in extreme climates, have different modes of transportation, very broad range of economic conditions.............even met many doing the same trip as we are.....but at the end of the day....it is family and our loved ones that keep us where we live.......without the roots of family and friends..........we would never go back home.

Killarney

Leaving Parry Sound headed toward Killarney....calm water and we had a nice day for traveling.....as usual lots of opportunities for good photos ....especially of light houses.....

This is just one of the scenes we are seeing most often...just laid back and enjoying nature and life. You know it has made us really think about what is truly important in life......

These "Cottages" are all built on their own island and rock.....really unique.....

As we approach Killarney we see more boats and here we are...................

Just amazing church in Killarney...................we had pretty much seen the city in our 20 minute walk....but then again....everything you need here............

We are making good time as we head to Chicago for me to head home for a few days......only one night here....but we enjoyed the town. We just wish, as do the locals, that the rain , clouds and cold weather would give in to the summer season.

Parry Sound

We arrived in Parry Sound this afternoon after stopping for lunch at Henry's. Lynn is tired, so I will let her write the blog tomorrow. Some small channels today but mostly more open water. We want to get an early start tomorrow to beat the afternoon wind for about a 60 mile open water run. Lynn's color analyst to come later... ey!
Lynn's commentary:

I am starting to sound like a broken record......amazing, beautiful and etc are just not the correct adjectives for this atmosphere. It has to be such a different kind of life living here. I do know many people have a 'cottage' here just for the summer....and I do think most summers are warmer than this year......

The different color of rock...and/or granite is so unusual. In particular it is not one of one's favorite sights when maneuvering a boat thru the surrounding waters............but you still cannot help but appreciate the natural beauty....................

Cottages come in all shapes, styles and sizes...................

Lunch at Henry's .... The favorite place in all the books to have lunch....guess?? Fish and Chips...and it was tasty...light .....and many boaters docked for the night here.....not a bad idea..............

The seaplanes were everywhere........Even rides were available once we arrived in Parry Sound.....they would take you to dinner.....yes you guessed right.....to Henry's for fish n' chips..........

She always looks so tired after a long day...and quite at home at the many docks she has frequented these last few months....

Tuesday night car meet in Parry Sound...

Some of these cars were so old....and in such good shape.....1928, 1951, Ford Fairlane, Chevy, I think there was a one of everything.....and such pride. The owners had their wiping clothes with them...making sure the shine lasted thru the evening............

We enjoyed our stay here.....one night was just right and onward we go toward Chicago............

So...We pull up ...dock ...and are waiting our turn! BIG CHUTE! Really strange seeing these creatures of the water being loaded and strapped on such a structure..........and literally railed across a street and put back into their element....it must be how the fish feels....whew....when we finally take the hook out and throw him back in...Home at last! But of course...Jerry had to take photos...and document....you notice I am just sitting ...very still..................... They had three in the chute when we arrived.............we watched ....as the process took place.....

Now our turn....two smaller boats in front and we get to hang over the back edge.....you notice who is on the front????? Smart first mate..................

These guys do this all day, no big deal.......................

Out the front ....view was nice....felt sort of like a roller coaster...of sorts................Above is view out the back.......just in case any of you are coming this way...you can be prepared! And over we go......WHHEEEEEE...................

Back to the water where she belongs.....

Today was only 4 locks (including Big Chute). The Trent Severn Waterway (all 42 locks and 240 miles) is now history...

OK...so now that that ride is over....lets get on to the easy part.....putting the boat right between all of these markers in the blowing wind....because on both sides is rock......I love games......just as long as I win....don't you?

Honestly ...this was the view off the side of our boat as we puttered thru....................

Finally open water and the marina......We stayed at Bay Moorings Marina and they could not have been more helpful. Dock hands met us, pumped us out, fueled us, and met us at our slip to secure us in the high winds. Great job! Amanda, the harbour master, even took me to the store. Our neighbors, Trish and Gary, had us over for happy hour and gave us info of where to go (forgot to get pictures).

Jerry took a bike ride this morning and here are a few shots of the town. ..............

We arrived late.....and took a day for catching up on business and having a few things done to the boat.....back on the charts tomorrow.......Great stop....and very "Looper" friendly.

Good bye Orillia

We spent 3 nights in Orillia....It seems that around every corner another temptation lurks.....Great bakery.......everything and anything the mind can imagine. Sweet breakfast pastries, doughnuts, breads, pizzas, fudge and candies....I am sure I forgot something. Jerry had a bagel and I did not give in................On to the Saturday Market where hopefully we will see only calorie free foods....................

The Opera House in Orillia...........pretty flowers everywhere...............

Market where we found fresh bagels, tomatoes and cucumbers and much more..........we are set for the week...................

This afternoon we took on the task of washing the boat.....and as we were mopping.....in came the tour boat......................

Date Night.......Ossawippi Express Dining Cars...........A train no less.....I felt right at home.......

As we made our way thru date night....we meet many friendly people......we always enjoy telling our trip story....and everyone always has the same reaction........How did you get here from Tennessee????? NO WAY!!!

This young man was in from school for his sisters wedding and was nice enough to share his table with us.....he had lived in Orillia growing up and told us many interesting things about the area. Thank you for the information...we enjoyed your company!

Another great couple.....They were having a date week-end....good for them......sorry we pooped out so early!

Docked next to us on their boat.....a couple from Tarpon Springs....we enjoyed your visit and conversation. I bet we see you on our next Loop Trip.....they (he) is thinking about it!

Bobcaygeon to Orillia

So....Jerry wakes me once again ....one more day of lock and rollin'......except today we get to experience going thur the Trent Canal ....actually cut into the rock many years ago....now we have narrow, rock on the bottom, and both sides and in some places less than a foot deep... oh did I mention 10 locks today?? When we passed another large boat....we were unable to obtain photos.....that would be because we were too busy watching the channel....Captain Jerry prevailed without any incidents........................

Pretty rocky, ey? our new Canadians phrase. So the conversations are "Nice day, 'ey?" ....it is catching on with me.............

As you can see the channel is clearly marked.................just a little narrow.............'EY????

As we enter one of the 10 locks we will do today............all is well and we resemble a bumper boat...........sometimes high ....sometimes low....so I just put 7 fenders on the starboard side high and low............we are ready now for anything..........bring it on!

OK....so maybe not for this one...........another LIFT LOCK..............this one is amazing...built in 1903....you actually pull into a large pan of water....another boat is pulling into another pan below and up and down you go.............it is a weird feeling....sort of like a roller coaster..........

Arriving our destination....Port of Orillia.............We are so happy to be here........as one could imagine..........just getting the boat docked seems like Christmas .......We just want to celebrate another day..........and we made it..............we will be here 3 nights (pay for 2 -1 free)...only 4 more locks (including "Big Chute" - more on that later)

OK....So Jerry wakes me at 7 am saying "Let's Lock and Roll"....and I replied from under the covers....GRRRRR.....Up and at 'em at our first lock....waiting in line at the first lock.....but we were number 2 and away we go........This will be an all dayer.....11 locks and one of those is the famous Peterborough Lift Lock.......................

Not all the locks are operated manually but many still are "manpower" only...

This boat has been places no boat should go............ha...ha..........

This Lift Lock was truly amazing.....you pull in on the right...literally into a pan of water........they take the left side down and you up..........and out you go at the top.......no current.....fun.......we traveled the first few locks today with this sailboat...........we talked....took photos of each other and exchanged cards.....we will email each other the pictures......always nice to meet the people...I keep saying it ...but people it is really what it is all about, eh? That is what all the Canadians say...."eh".....it is really catchy!

We just could not get enough photos of this.................unbelievable.

As we head up Clear Lake....it is very picturesque....all the homes built on the rocks...and the drive in boat houses under the homes....also just in the middle of the channel .....clusters of rocks.....granite .....it is very beautiful and some of the patios are even the natural rock that is there...just look closely....................

You can see why I am having a hard time writing tonight....look at these markers....and if you get out of the channel.....that grinding sound of rock will remind you...........

I guess this is a sound foundation..............ROCK.......................

How about going to church by boat...

Beautiful homes............."On Golden Pond".........That is what it reminded us of.....................

As we entered Gorden Yacht Harbor............. Wednesday night sail boat races.............

We went to a great Italian Restaurant for dinner....walked thru town and had to go thru

Bigley's...shoes and clothing...I have never seen so many shoes (10,000 pairs) in my life in one place....They also have bathing suits (2,000)..........and buyers come from afar to find the one that is just right.........lots of fun to look..........

Ok....so as we fall into bed.....I am thinking......is it all worth it? Exhaustion has set in.....and YES it is......absolutely......people, scenery, and the different ways we all live........ makes ya think!

Peterborough

On our way to Peterborough, Ontario Canada......many of the water falls remind me of the rippling waters over the rocks in the Smokey Mountains.......... But just when I was reminiscent of Tennessee.....the horror of........another lock......today we have 7 to get thru....................so boat hooks in hand....onward we creep.....the maximum speed many places is 10 km.....that equates to 6 miles per hour................This will be a 9 hour day to cover about 40 miles.......SLOW.......but more picturesque scenery...and time to prepare lunch...............

It is amazing that the locks are actually becoming kind of pretty....................the warm colors of the doors as the water splashes happily around..............

I think "Lock Art "......may be the title of my new book...................................

One of our new acquaintances from Campbellford....,"Frankly Terrific" , Frank and Terry...it is nice to take photos and email them to each other...you rarely have a picture of both of you on your own boat!

Finally arriving in Peterborough we were "petered out".......so just got a late bite of dinner and will catch up tomorrow. We plan to stay a second night here. Do laundry, buy groceries ...and catch up on this blog In the center of the harbor is the tallest fountain in Canada....with bright colored lights at night....really pretty

This is a breast cancer survivors rowing team..........pretty inspiring.

Jerry decides to check out the props for any live greenery.....and down he goes.......(kinda favors something from the blue lagoon?) Props looked great...yea!

A little excitement today ...as I was shopping...the wind blew the bike in the water...but the new boat hook came thru......Jerry was able to fish it out.............good job!

We will be leaving early for what may be the most strenuous day yet as we try to make it to Bobcaygeon........................

P.S....We did not get many photos of Peterborough....but it is the largest city we have been to since Kingston. We walked the city, found the marine store, checked out the stores....and managed to do all of the above too....so all in all....it was a good stay....and day..........

Campbellford

Leaving Trenton headed for Campbellford.....The title of this entry to the blog is LOCKS ...LOCKS AND MORE LOCKS...........

As we enter the first lock...you can see how narrow it looks......we are getting more use to this...... We just put a dozen fenders on each side...heehee

So it isn't enough to have to worry about both sides of the boat.....lets worry about the height too!!!! I finally understand why boaters drink so much.

All of these locks are bringing us UP.....that seems to be a little easier to me... So far there have been ropes hanging to hold onto...or cables to to run your line behind...it seems to work well.

There she is....looking proud.....who wouldn't be after going thru all of these?
(Thought I was teasing about the 12 fenders?)

And away we go once again...............................

12 Locks in all today.................Will I get a badge or something for this later?.......Maybe a book about my locking thru skills?????

The channels were well marked with tiny red and green markers....and in a few places as shallow as 2 feet....fun .....fun.....

I have become accustomed to the binoculars.....searching for those signs hiding in the bushes and trees........I know this is really a test?

The lock masters were all so nice and helpful.....they open and close some locks manually........

Jerry looks like he is having way too much fun........should I worry that I am moving to Canada ??My tool of choice.....the good ole' boat hook........couldn't live without it!!

And of course Jerry had to have one too....he always wants what I have....hiss.....

Guess what this is????? Another Lock??? NO....Two locks together. Just when I thought we had the system figured out! You go into the first lock...it lifts you up...opens the door...and into lock number 2 you go......double whammy....

We docked at the city dock.....right downtown....but arrived late. We walked across to meet some of the other boaters and talk.......always fun .....This couple had just purchased their Carver a few months ago...and are having a great time....they live in Toronto.......They came by the morning we were leaving to see our hardwood floors on the boat.....they want to do them in theirs................and then off we go for breakfast.....................

All the way here.....Dooher's Bakery is all we heard about....the real highlight of the city! So here we are for a fat free doughnut and bagel.....of course we had to have warm bread and oatmeal -jam cookies to go.....................

He even looks guilty......................Really fantastic bakery..........Well worth the calories!

Trenton

Leaving Kingston today...the good news is no locks....beautiful day and a large open body of water to cross....The Bay of Qunite....we saw some really interesting sights.........

The police boat zooms up behind us.........oh no what have we done now????? He passes us on the port side.....WHEW.........

We arrived in Trenton just in time for the airshow.....Trenton has the largest Air Force Base ........they are the Canadian Blue Angles (snowbirds)..........they were colorful, loud and definitely fast................

The town was really neat.........after enjoying conversation with the Fraser Park Marina owners , Craig and Sandy Carter, we had to sample some of their wonderful ice cream. They were really helpful and friendly. We walked the streets of the town....colorful and clean as all of Canada has been.

We plan to do a poster of "Looper Doors." from all the different cities........there has been so many different styles and colors.....

Nice street lanterns adorned with flowers....and all the bright flags.....we were also just amazed at the recycling that is done here. You are charged a deposit for all glass bottles and also are charged for the plastic grocery bags...it really encourages you to take your own. Also in many of the towns we noticed the shops are antique stores, vintage clothing, repeat boutiques for all ages .......it is amazing ....the passing on of goods.....we should do more of this back home............

Even the side wall of a store is painted to add character and interest....nice job!

We met a Canadian couple on their Carver docked next to us.....Wayne and Susie...on Susie-Q....(I hope that is right) they came over to chat .....and see our boat. It is so nice to talk to the local residents and get questions answered. Jerry had several for Wayne about the route to take....which marinas he preferred and so forth......Thank you for the info.....We exchanged cards....who knows we might see you in Tennessee sometime!

The sail boat on the other side of us ...they were having a party. Later one of the dock masters told us he was there and saw us on our boat. They have been working on this boat for several years and even made the sails themselves! FUN We had a great spot at the marina...next to a pretty park with benches and many flowers......the only thing was getting the boat in the tight spot with all the wind......oh my........more fun for Jerry......but we did have good help!

Whooooo.....................Getting out was not as bad.......Thank goodness.

Leaving Oswago and crossing Lake Ontario.......Nice day again.......Lots of activity as the Canadians prepare for Canada Day...............Goodbye United States....see you in a few weeks.............

The wind mill farm was awesome..........the celebration had already started with the sailboat races.........probably a hundred brightly colored sails moved thru the water as we approached..............

Approaching Kingston, Ontario....

All of the photos of the harbor and the festivities...........Canada's colors are red and white......the water here has much greenery growing in it.......guess it is clean and invites the growth............

We anchored out until we could secure a space at the marina..........oh my..........the green blob has appeared.......................as we moved under the opening bridge we got some looks.............

The waterfront is downtown Kingston.....lots of activities were going on................Live music all day........with many different bands and sounds.........too much fun.....many shops and restaurants too....

The local police celebrated with their motorcycles ........

Guess you can tell who always takes the pictures for this blog...............and it is always me in the front...........................

The lawns were splattered with blankets and chairs as families and students were off for the holiday...................There seemed to be even more tents as the craft and art fair started the next day. Of course I was up and gone to secure treasures from the trip.......Jerry and I enjoyed lunch at Kingston Brewery......great Cobb Salad Sandwich.....will be my secret to be shared later.............

Rain ran us to the boat to dry off.......but all in all.......a good day.

On our way to Oswago via the Erie Canal.......more locks........
Getting closer as we leave the Erie Canal and start the Oswago Canal .......

Along the way....many nice water fronts with docks along the wall. Wish we had more of this in Tennessee!!! Really pretty and nice for the residents of the small towns.

This lock had a bridge to open in addition to the lock doors.......just get us thru all these.............

Water falls along the way...reminded me of the smoky mountains and all the flowing bubbling streams we have there.

The nice thing about Loopers is that we keep seeing each other along the way....Rick and Betsy on "Rick and Roll " are staying at the marina near by...........

This new approach to fishing seems to work for him........yuck....

Brian and Jan joined us for dinner...........always nice to break bread with fellow Loopers .......It is so interesting how you make new friends and somehow feel like you have known them a lifetime. That is the feeling I had with Jan......Just an easy going soul.....great fun we had with you.

Our favorite thing.....eating.....what a great salad Jan makes......not to mention the cake....oh my goodness.....Who thought we would maybe loose weight on this trip......

Brewerton here we come across Lake Oneida......... Unusual place for a light house ....but different and pretty........

Finally made it and time for her to get rinsed off...no more salt....freshwater is definitely easier on all of us....The marina was really nice...very clean and friendly.....

Here was a great place to have some work done on the boat. Jerry said they did a good job and were really reasonable. Also they two loaner cars (Mercedes) available so we were able to go to the Walmart....yes yes yes.....all the cabinets are full now!!!

Brian and Jan... on "Roving Seas".....prepared us a great dinner...and we got to enjoy their wonderful boat. Lots of wood and character...and just great space to enjoy....it just felt so good. Makes us wonder if we want a trawler.....And Jan's cooking was another matter....I have a ways to go.....Great fun with great people.....

We met another family, they were taking back their new Viking from NJ to Detroit ......They were so nice and ask if we would like to see inside.......oh my goodness...what a boat....is that the right word...??? Yacht or ship sounds better.....but regardless....it is beautiful .....congratulations........

Jerry ...of course ...had to tour the engine room....he thought it was the best part of the boat......

Guess these are the best diesel prices we will see for a while.......we filled up .....AGAIN.............and on we go.......

More locks, bridges and friendly lock masters and locals as they help us thru the locks. It is really nice that the locks usually have people watching the boats as they fish...or they may drive over just to say "Hello..Welcome ...Where ya' from?"....sometimes lending great tidbits of info on where to go ...what to see and where to beware of rough and shallow waters.....Thank you guys so very much for making us feel so at home.

Guard gates can be intimidating....

Believe it or not....we have not lost the radar on top to any of the bridges yet.......it rained on us today as we eased down the waterway......but still an enjoyable day of boating......and a sence of accomplishment as we get more locks and bridges behind us!

New friends on their beautiful ROVING SEAS....Brian and Jan from are doing the "Down East LOOP" ......true water lovers they seem happy to be back on the boat! Today was her birthday.....they stopped by for a glass of wine and later joined us for music......we hope to see you along the way and so enjoyed your company!

Again....meeting special people is really what this trip has turned out to be all about! Our Canadian friends...just bought their boat on ebay sight unseen and are taking her home to Canada. They do this often and enjoy the boating as well as the different boats! We joined them at Holly Rock for music and dollar beer! Again....giving us some valuable info about the waters in the area....that we are so unfamiliar with....Thank you and see you soon!
Rick and Julie...from Syracuse New York ...enjoy their boat and the area on week ends. We had seen them dancing at "Yesterday's Royal", a great little place with really good music....something different nightly....Rick and Julie showed their talent....man it makes you want to take lessons...Thanks guys ...you have inspired us! We met up with them again at The Pancake House.....what a great breakfast spot.

We are docked at the wall (free docking)...but the lilies are just beautiful ....this is what I have seen all week end from my galley window.....

As you can see this is a popular weekend spot.....more so when the weather is sunny...

Many young couples....families and boaters enjoy the beach, eateries, and all the 60's fashion amusement park....this was also free fishing week end.....so many lines cast about!

Jerry got a shirt from the Bacardi girls (forgot to get their picture) .....Again joining new friends....we had a wonderful time.....hope we see you again on the water along the way.......................

Missy entertained us this morning before we left.....as she fetched her toy relentlessly time and time again......climbing the ladder and having a good shake every time. So cute! Ilion, NY

On our way to Ilion Marina....several guard gates (flood water control) , narrow areas , the shallow being 9 feet....it was a hot sunny day. We managed 5 locks and 25 miles....took us 5 hours.....but without any unexpected surprises.....

Lock number 17, the only one like it in the US, is guillotine style.....be prepared to take a little water from the gate as it lifts before you enter..... We are 19.6 and have been fine thru all the bridges and this one as well!!! Yeah ....we still have our radar and light on top!

Along the way we past several pretty public dock areas (most are free).....really nice for the residents and us Loopers.....

We arrived at Ilion....washed the boat of all the lock debris and waited for the storm headed out way. Ilion is a nice stop, some campers and a little restaurant with great burgers if you are tired and opt out on cooking! We did laundry and decided to move on since it was raining.....but the Remington Arms museum and factory had been recommended as a worthwhile experience...

Today we hope to do 4 locks , two up and two down....40 miles and dock at Sylvan Beach on Oneida Lake tonight....Keep ya posted.

Sooo....every day is a new adventure...have I said that before? Today we traveled 60 miles, went thru 12 locks (average lift-25') and who knows how many bridges.....and with zero clearance.....We are 19'6' tall and some of the bridges were 20'. That will make your hair stand up in strange places. It took us 10 hours, but we arrived at Canajoharie, NY....home of Beech-Nut baby food and gum! So this is what I like looked all day.............and Jerry was doing the same on the stern. Here many of the locks have lines that you grab...gooey and slimmy...uck!

Just a beautiful hot sunny day in New York........amazing how much it looks like Tennessee!

Here we are at our dock! Bob and Lynn Williamson on "LaGrace" are here and have been so helpful! He had told us about this spot to stop.....they are very active in The Great Loop Association. It is free dockage here and also power and water are free! Waterford was free dockage, water, and power (for 2 nights)...sure beats NYC $4.40 per ft per night.

There is Bob!..........What a wealth of knowledge! Thank you!

Before we left we visited the small but fantastic Arkell Museum (original Winslow Homer and Georgia O'Keeffe paintings) and bought some pottery at the Picture Perfect Gallery.

As we approach the lock to Waterford from Troy New York, it has been a little while since I have done this song and dance.................This was pretty easy.....just pipe to put your line around and many fenders...thank you very much..........We arrived in time to get a spot to dock and to see Jeff and Susie on Idyll Time....they are from Chattanooga.......another Tennessean....Yeah.... We got docked with much good help just in time to catch the market....fresh tomatoes, bread, eggs and a really great piece of pottery..........Just have to have a few token memories of our trip.......

The tugboat is being refurbished and the waterfall is part of the lock system..overflow.......

Greet and Meet....everyone brought a snack and we discussed places to see and where we had been so far on this Loop................really a nice group of people......

On our way to Troy, New York.....smooth ride (110 miles) with 3 knot current against us.....but what an enjoyable day...

More bridges, barges and lighthouses.............................................

It really looks a lot like home, Tennessee....lots of green and hills. Also many floating logs and "stuff" after the rain we have had......

Passing by West Point Academy...what a beautiful facility....made us think of our friend Rick Boyd as we passed ......salute to you sir.....

Now really...you have to admit this is a pretty lighthouse......

And another pretty lighthouse....all shapes and sizes ....we could house the homeless in these wonderful homes.....

And so as we cruised along...blue lights approached....Coast Guard boarded for our first inspection ......Thank goodness Jerry is on top of it and had all the necessary docs and we were fine. Really nice guys that do a good job keeping us all safe.

Bob(the diver) came and checked out our props....just a little line....I guess that explains the vibration we were having on the way up..................

Met some locals at dinner....they were very kind and gave us heads up on the local market and art fair the next day. Thank you.....

Bob, was nice enough to come back the next morning and take us to West Marine for a few things we needed. He showed us Albany and the area.......we had a wonderful breakfast at Francesca's.....what a great place ........We then proceeded to the Art Fair....great music, food and lots of shopping.........................Troy Girl......shows us the art of making beautiful pottery. Be sure to check them out in downtown Troy....their store is The Broken Mold Sudio.....really nice selection.The talent on the drums was amazing.......the crowd finally started dancing.....and the art gallery had lots to offer for every taste........Our boat as we leave Troy for Waterford...just a few miles, three bridges and one lock up the waterway...................

Tarrytown, NY

Tarrytown, only 30 miles from Manhattan.....named this because the husbands tary at the bars a little too long........a small commuter town north of New York.. .As we approahed the Palisades .....500 ft rock cliffs....

One of the things we do what we do best............PUT FUEL IN THE BOAT and we are not liking the price increases we are seeing..............We may be taking up a collection to get us back home!!
We walked up the large incline to Tarrytown.......the commuters are getting on and off the trains.....
Jerry and I are getting really good at this posing thing for each other to take pictures......We are taking them of the street anyway.....so one of us always jumps in.................ha..........it doesn't take much to entertain us....................

Art galleries, small stores, restaurants and older homes fill the streets.........Unusually busy for late afternoon small town .......nice friendly people with many varied backgrounds....real estate is very expensive because of the proximity to the city.

We had another wonderful meal.....seafood of course and thought we should celebrate............I forget what? But the deserts just looked too good to pass up.

Another day.......another place..........so different and yet very much the same.........Have you noticed how poetic I am getting??? haha... and today we have finally got caught up on the blog.....it is raining here and we are trapped on the boat...........so finally....finished .....we will do better at trying to keep you posted.....follow us up the Hudson.
